    typical monday?

Monday, February 4, 2008, 05:07 PM CST [General]

I'm tired.  Isn't it funny how when you really don't want to post, and you go to post your apology for not having the energy and/or desire to post, that those are the times that you find you really have a lot of say (none of it important, mind you).

So it's monday, the day after "the big game."  We had fairly bad weather last week, so we were closed friday for a "snow day."  Apparently, a lot of our faculty and staff decided that if a three day weekend was good, well a four day weekend must be better. ;)  And so, I fielded calls all morning from people who weren't going to be able to make it in to work today and, although they didn't say it, just wanted to be sure that someone was there to be jealous of their decision to stay at home.  Even the two student workers I had scheduled to help in the office today called in!

And so, the first person who came in to the office to work with me was my direct boss... about 3 hours late (she had a good excuse - she was taking her hubby to the doctor... and we all know hubby's don't like to go on their own... but that's a post for another day. ;) )

So I was the model little worker today.  I did my work, including some things that I had been putting off, and I also did my student workers' jobs.  I was busy all day.  And then, about 3, an instructor came into the office (one of the few who did come in... she's new, so no surprise).  She said there was a leak in her classroom.  Now, if you were familiar with the building I work in, you'd understand that this isn't an unusual occurance.  Quite often the ceiling gets a little damp in places, and a slow, annoying drip may come out of the middle.  And so, I walked down to her classroom (one that hadn't had a leak in it before), only to find a little shower coming out of the light fixture. About the speed if you turned on the shower at about half pressure.  Well, I put a big garbage can under it, and went and told someone else about the problem. (Ah, the chain of command at a state school!)

So, all was right again, and I resumed my busy little pace in the office, until about 4pm.  Now, mind you, I get off at 4:15.  At that time, the other new instructor came into the office, and told me that there was a leak in her classroom.  Well, it was the same classroom, so I told her I was aware of it, and we (well, someone else) had already called it in to facilities (the great and mighty black hole that is facilities. ;) ), but that I would come down and see if I could do something more before her class started.  Well, that half-pressure shower had indeed changed.  It was now the beginnings of a waterfall, with 4 garbage cans in use, streaming out of two light fixtures, and the asbestos ceiling texture starting to form soggy little piles on the floor!  Oh my!  I saw the first instructor trying to cover the eletronic equipment with garbage bags.  We finally pulled the plug on the main power to the teacher's desk, moved what we could, and I moved the brand-new document camera across the room... well away from the leak.  I had paid the bill on that one just last August, and even if it wasn't my money, I didn't want to have to do that again.

After that was done, and the Dean came down to see the mess (sometimes that's the only way to get facilities to jump) I looked at my watch and it was quitting time.  Usually, this means an hour wait while I wait for my hubby, who works across campus, to finish work and come pick me up.  I turned the light over my desk off (I always think it will give people a hint that I'm off work -- it doesn't) and settled my little butt in my chair to play a couple of games, when I remembered - he left me the car today!  And so, I hopped in our sporty little car and zoomed off through the pea soup that was the fog this afternoon.

And now, I must apologize, because I am much too tired after this day to post to my blog.  I'll be sure to catch you all up tomorrow. ;)

    And so begins....

Monday, January 14, 2008, 12:41 PM CST [General]

Another semester at the University.  The students change every few years, and it seems the intructors are changing about as frquently, lately.  But we're still essentialy here, and still doing essentially the same thing.  Today is the first day of classes for the Spring semester.  Sure, the office staff were here all during break, except the week we get off for the "holidays," but this is the first time back in a month for the students and instructors.

The academic advisor isn't in again today... he was out all last week, and then e-mailed in today that he would be in tomorrow.  No reason, just was.  I've had 14 people who have needed to see him, and it's still morning!  *sigh* It is not for me to question why. ;)

I have student help all day long again.  Unfortunately, I'm the only one in the office, and I've run out of things for them to do!  I'm still swamped with beginning of the semester things (of course, that's why I'm blogging!), but it's all confidential things - student records, faculty evaluations, Dean's List.  Hopefully, we'll get a few instructors in who will give them some copying to do.

Well, I'm just rambling on.  Still trying to get into the habit of posting regularly.  I haven't done so well yet, but I keep thinking if I come on and write something, eventually I'll develop the habit. ;)  But now I'm hungry, so I'm going to go and try to drum up some lunch.

Take care all, and blessed be!
